POLICE ADMINISTRATION

Regional Police Establishments

For effective policing and maintenance of law and order, the entire country is divided into thirteen (13) Police Regions (i.e. National Headquarters, Accra, Tema, Ashanti, Eastern, Western, Central, Brong Ahafo, Volta, Northern, Upper East and Upper West, Railway and Ports).

Each regional police has a REGIONAL Commander in charge of both administrative and operational issues.

He is directly responsible for all Policing activities in the region. Administratively, the Regional Commander reports to the Inspector-General of Police through the Deputy Inspector-General of Police/Administration, who is assisted by the Commissioner of Police/Administration.

All operational matters are reported to the IGP through the Deputy IGP/Operations, assisted by COP/Operations.

The Regional Commander is assisted in the overall management and handling of operational issues by a Regional Operational Commander.

Administratively, the Regional Commander is assisted by his/her second in command and the Crime Officer.

Every region, except the National Headquarters, is divided into divisions with each division headed by a Divisional Commander.

i. Each division is divided into districts with a District Commander in charge.

ii. Each district has direct control and supervisory responsibilities over all Police Stations and Posts placed under it.

Directly under the control and supervision of the regional commander are the following Units.

  • Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU)
  • Crime Offices
  • Courts and Prosecution
  • Public Affairs
  • Arms and Ammunition
  • Pay Offices
  • Audit Offices etc.
  • Police Training Schools (in five regions only)
  • Mobile Force (in eight regions)

The present Police Administrattion has embarked on an expansionist programme to bring policing services closer to the communities.

In line with this, new regions, divisions and districts have been created:

Presently we have:

13 Regions

51 Divisions

179 Districts

651 Stations
